Spike in WA meningococcal cases

Health authorities have reported a spike in the number of meningococcal cases in WA from a strain that Australians are not routinely vaccinated for. There have been 17 reported cases of meningococcal in Western Australia this year, and the majority have been an emerging strain referred to as ‘W’. Australians have been vaccinated against the ‘C’ strain of meningococcal for decades, and that strain has all but disappeared.
