Gastro outbreak in WA childcare centres, nursing homes

A sharp increase in outbreaks of gastroenteritis in Western Australian childcare centres and nursing homes has prompted a warning from the state’s health authorities. In the past six weeks there have been six reported outbreaks at childcare centres and 19 at nursing homes across the state. Health Department epidemiologist Dr Barry Coombs said an alert had been sent to all childcare centres urging them to take extra precautions. “What we call an outbreak is two or more ill people in 24 hours, so six in the last six weeks in childcare centres, that’s above what we’d expect,” Dr Coombs said.…
