The mass resignation is NOT a threat from doctors who think they are untouchable from MEDAXS's blog

Letter written by the wife of a highly trained Cardiologist in Brisbane-Doctors are protesting for noble reasons and need your support. #qldpol #smoqld #keepourdoctors

Senior Medical Doctors have been serving our State’s public hospitals for years or decades and today Campbell Newman told them they could all be easily replaced by overseas doctors.

The doctors who are protesting these contracts are the ones who have chosen to remain in the public health system despite the fact they could earn more money working in private practice. They are protesting for noble reasons and need your support.

I know several doctors who actually LOSE money from their private practices while they attend their public hospital clinics and theatre lists. It actually costs them money to be away from their private practices but they do it anyway.

Many doctors have chosen to work solely for Queensland Health and not establish private practices at all. The public health doctors of QLD have already agreed to a paycut.

So this is NOT about money for these doctors. Many continue to work in the public health system out of a sense of giving back to the system that helped to train them, so they can help train the next generation of doctors.

Some do it because they wish to contribute to the research and development of new drugs and procedures through involvement in clinical trials.

Most doctors choose to work in the public hospitals so that they can provide their expertise and skills to ALL Queenslanders, not just the ones who can afford private health insurance.

Our QLD doctors are paid a salary for a 40 hour week and yet they leave home before the rest of us are eating breakfast and come home long after dinner has been served.

Queensland Health doctors are also rostered on-call which means they and their families are awakened at night by urgent phone calls seeking their expertise and skills.

They deal with admin and funding bullshit behind the scenes that you or I never know about and they deal with it on behalf of their patients so that their patients get the best possible treatment outcome.

These doctors give their blood, sweat and tears to a system that has always asked for more than it gives.

Queensland doctors are not working in a Public Hospital for the money….. They can walk away from all of this crap and their income would actually INCREASE simply by being able to spend more time at their private practices. These are the Queensland doctors who Campbell Newman said today are easily replaceable.

If you or a member of your family has a heart attack on Brisbane’s southside at 2am they would be in good hands if my husband was called in to perform their PCI.

He graduated from a 6 year Medical Degree at Queensland Uni with First Class Honours. He spent a further six years training in Cardiology. Then he did not one, but THREE voluntary Fellowships to hone his skills which added an extra 3 years of training to the previous 12 years of study and training he had already completed. These Fellowships were UNFUNDED positions that cost him money out of his own pocket.

He trained here in QLD, in Victoria and in Boston at The Mass General Hospital- a Harvard institution. Then he came back to QUEENSLAND to work in the Public Health system, to treat sick QUEENSLANDERS.

Today Campbell Newman said he was easily replaceable.

What an insult!

Replaced by overseas doctors not wanted by anyone else when we have such skilled doctors here simply asking for some job security and the right to choose their own treatments for their patients!

This is an emotional time for Queensland Doctors. The contracts they are being asked to sign means they would be forced to “consider the profitability of the hospital” when choosing treatments for patients.

They can be dismissed at any time under laws that were previously considered unlawful! The contracts mean their place of work and work hours can be changed at any time without consultation. Under these contracts their incomes are not secured and can change at any time.

Would you sign a contract that meant your income was not secure? These contracts mean the QLD Health MANAGERS get to dictate treatment plans for patients based on cost not on medical evidence.

Who do you want dictating your treatment options at your bedside at 2am- A specialised medical doctor or an administrator of QLD health?

These doctors are all too aware of the incompetence of QLD Health Managers and Administrators.

Patient care will definitely suffer. Our doctors are the advocates for our hospitals!

Lawrence Springborg is quoting figures in the media that are out of context and not reflective of the true doctor’s salary or working hours…. He is trying to make this look like greedy doctors who are rorting the system.

The mass resignation is not a threat from ‘arrogant’ doctors who think they are untouchable. It is the only option public doctors have been offered by Campbell Newman’s government that they can actually go through with.

Signing the contracts means certain doom for the very system that these doctors have worked so hard for all their working lives.

Don't vote for the LNP next time or ever again!
Mar 22 '14, 08:41
And we voted for him? I wonder if he has thought this through? I am not sure he understands what the Bundaberg disaster cost the patients, families and tax payers of Queensland. Mr Newman. I know what these doctors do. And I see what hours they work. You are insulting them and showing your lack of ability through your remarks. I am assuming that the way you are managing this is not due to lack of intelligence but related to poor information you are receiving. Maybe you need to look at who is giving you advice. I respectfully request you do not loose these very skilled and professional people and replace them with others who do not match up! And it will take at least 6 to 9 months to find and bring in overseas doctors!

This man and his associates is a disgrace to Qld

This is symptomatic of the problem the AMA has with everyone else. The sense of self entitled moral superiority that pervades their reasoning blinds them to the rest of society.
I support the medicos in their fight to prevent individual contracts.
I do not support commentary that seeks to divert negative attention to administrators. So reign in your high horse and get after the real perpetrators of funding abuse.

Why not replace That dickhead ,
Mar 22 '14, 20:50
Newman, you are ridiculous.. I agree, you should be the one to get replaced..

Has Newman forgotten about the Dr Patel saga! The governments own systems failed to act upon whistleblower information and so he continued to inflict damage on patients. I support the Doctors of Queensland, especially those in the Public system, they work extremely hard and very long hours. We the public fail to recognise this often. If you have a petition on or similar my family, friends and I will sign. My current Dr is an Middle Eastern trained Dr and she is wonderful but she went through a very thorough 18mth process to get here. I don't want my loved ones or any Queenslander treated by hurriedly arranged overseas Drs, someone like Patel might slip through the cracks.

While I strongly support your cause I object your comment "Replaced by overseas doctors not wanted by anyone else". I am one of the numerous well-trained overseas doctors who work and contribute to Australian Public Health Care system. Most overseas trained doctors go through the big personal struggle that you spoke about so emotionally! Add to that the pangs of settling in a new country/new system and you can imagine who makes bigger sacrifices!! So it will be better for your fight if you did not make it into "our fight" and "their fight". I encounter this soft racism on day to day basis but do not want it to bring down your struggle against a stupid minister!

How dare you Campbell Newman you are the only one who needs to sign a contract to leave our Doctors alone, who are you to Judge the conditions of the professional with Golden Hands and Hearts, you can not put a price on their income or work conditions,They leave their families in the middle of the night or very early hours in the morning, not even seeing their on kids off on their way for the day. They never finish on time until they they know their patients are OK.They endlessly Study to updated and why do they do all they do.TO SAVE PEOPLES LIVES look at what ages humans lived to back 20 years ago and how long they live for now and WHY IS THAT NEWMAN??? because of the DEDICATION and SACRIFICE of our GOLDEN HAND DOCTORS, How can you put a price on life Newman and What you are really saying IS OUR DOCTORS DESERVE NOTHING AND THE PEOPLE OF AUSTRALIA ONLY DESERVE OVERSEAS DOCTORS
LIKE THE ONE WHO WE JUST GOT RID OFF OR DO YOU FORGET NEWMAN do you think your government are the only ones who work hard and deserve a massive wage you greedy little boy.

I too am an overseas trained doctor working in the public system. I wonder if mr Newman is aware how long it takes, and how much money it costs for an international graduate to become unconditionally registered to practice in Australia. In my case, writing 2 exams and luckily passing each first time, only 18 months. That's All. I gather the waiting list at the AMC to write these exams grows ever longer. So finding suitable overseas docs may not be that simple, even if it were an acceptable solution. I have huge empathy for my QLD colleagues who are facing such a terrible decision and my heartfelt support goes out to them all.

Horrendous attitudes to "overseas trained doctors" like they are third rate. Don't ever forget, you too are overseas trained to everyone else... are you terrible? Are your standards poor?

Shame on our minister for public health and our Premier! These doctors are too good to lose and for what gain?
